In the early 1990s Edward Henry Bickersteth's book The Trinity introduced me to the basic Biblical evidences for the doctrine of the Trinity. Soon after reading the book I realized some of its weaknesses. For example, he cites verses as evidence where better manuscripts (of which he may not have been aware of) may not necessarily support the doctrine of the Trinity due to a textual variant. Nevertheless, Bickersteth's book is still a good basic introductory text in defense of the doctrine of the Trinity. There is another book in defense of the Trinity on the internet titled, "The Rock of Ages." I'm not certain whether they are the same book under two different titles (which I suspect and assume for the meantime), or two different books that are very similar. Both books can be downloaded at my main Trinity Resources blog HERE. According to Bickersteth, one of the main resources he referred to repeatedly in writing The Trinity was John Pye Smith's book, "The Scripture Testimony to the Messiah." So, I've hunted down links to copies freely downloadable online.
See also Bickersteth's other recommendations HERE.
Like all older defenses of the doctrine of the Trinity, the following works by Smith have some deficiencies and problems which I point out in my blog:
